Opinion about keeping kids in regular ed.

As an teacher of students with learning disabilities, I believe that student should always be exposed to the regular curriculum. If we are trying to catch them up, we need to help with their deficits...

Tie fleece blankets

Word parts

Have you thought about teaching word parts (roots, prefixes, suffixes)? There is a good book called Words on the Vine that teaches with a lot of activities.

Maybe make the time special

Maybe make it less formal. You could maybe offer juice or hot chocolate or a snack. Make it like they are coming to a to a less structured or casual environment like when an adult has a conversation...

If you have trouble finding the Orca, they have them on Amazon and they qualify for the 4 for the price of 3 plus the free shipping.

Have you read The Book Whisperer. I just met her this week at a workshop but had read the book previously. Students read while she is working with small groups or individually. It is a great book.

There is a book called Interactive Read Alouds.

Interactive Read-Alouds: Grades 6 - 7 by Linda Hoyt and Lynnette Brent Sandvold (2009)

Search it and go to the publisher. It is cheaper.

Developmental Design

The middle school version of responsive classroom called developmental design works well. I am actually in the second level training this week.
