The book Postedby John Anderson has students forbidden to bring phones to school and so they start using post-it notes and things go awry from there. Page turner!!! Great book.

By the same...

great read alouds

You can't go wrong with either of these as read alouds:

Snow Treasure
Twenty and Ten

Both deal with children in war areas - Norway and France.

north and south

You might look at Cold Sassy Tree as well as Witness (Hesse). Both deal with changing attitudes about desegregation - the first in the south and the latter in the north. Witness is a novel but...

I used Dies Drear with my 7th graders and they liked it a lot. For lower grades you might consider The Egypt Game, Something Upstairs, or Who Stole the Wizard of Oz. All are great.

I would make a list of the novel titles, and then after each title, jot down possible themes. Each should have at least two and most probably more.

Then I'd look at what other materials I...

newer books

I know you probably have more traditional books in mind, but two short, newer novels that would be excellent are "Witness" by Karen Hesse, and "Seedfolks" by Paul Fleishman. "Witness" deals with...

I am so sad to hear this. I hope you find some peace in the fact that you made her reading so pleasure filled, and showed how much you cared for her by lending her your kindle. God bless and keep...

high school

As good of a story as The Lottery is, I'd not read it in 8th grade. It is a key piece of literature in the high school American Literature anthologies. It's not awful for students to read a story...

We used a different text, but I did pretty much exactly what the two above mentioned - my own version of interactive notebooks.

To that I would add a giant timeline. Get a long (12' at least)...

Could you explain a little more about what you mean by diversity v. sameness? Did you mean you wanted a novel wherein diversity was not an issue? Or did you want something where for one group there...

I'm sorry - neither of those novels are in my cache of lessons. I know there is a lot for Hatchet online, and Bud, not Buddy is so popular you might be able to google it and get some help.

No, I do not have that rubric anymore. I can tell you that we started with Blooms taxonomy, if you are familiar with that, and decided how we would recognize the higher thinking skills in writing...

return rate

I tried staggering the "take home" days. NOT GOOD. My biggest problem is they went home - that's it - I could hardly get them back and there went my class set until after the novel was done.

I feel exactly the same as Mrs Pic. To that I would add that "Reading is imitative". A lot of people - possibly including your principal - do not know that. The voice inflections and pace are good...

I've used two Civil War related novels:

An excellent novel, Bull Run by Paul Fleischman is kind of different and you might like it. It's told journal style from the perspective of people from...

Asia or Europe?

If you are looking for Asia, I'd highly recommend The Master Puppeteer - Japan - teaches a bit about the culture and Samurai and is also a very good story. Male protagonist.

For strong readers,...

Hi there, again.

Oceania has not been traditionally considered part of Asia, but now and then you'll see an exception.

Kids used to ask and I'd tell them - it's islands, and like Hawaii, not...

Perhaps there is a lower grade teacher who would take...
