another note of thanks!

I would just like to add my little note of thanks to Whittlesey for D5 for Dummies - it has been wonderful with helping me to wrap my brain around CAFE and D5.

I have an area with all "double books." I labeled them by title, and marked how many copies were *supposed* to be there. Also, I provide a poem or two each week that the partners can use. It's an...

Have you checked www.teacherspayteachers.com ? Sometimes items have a cost, others are free. I have been able to find a lot of great resources for CAFE/D5 there. Good luck!

lessons and check-in

I observed a co-teacher last year who used the SB for mini-lessons. If you go to the SmartTech website, you'll find loads of lessons that you can use.

Also, when I first started the D5 last year,...

I'm with ya...

Extra recess is a HUGE motivator. Works every time. As long as you're consistent.

With my extra chatty classes, I started offering them five minutes of free "social time" at the end of class......

Slow workers....

Our time limit is 2 1/2 hours, and I've had kids not finish in that time.

What I would suggest first is find out why they're not finishing. One student of mint didn't finish because he would...

You said that you have 45 minutes per class; does that mean 45 minutes for Reading and 45 minutes for Writing? And you only have them 4 days a week?

Chasing Lincoln's Killer

My students have loved this book. Every group that has read it has loved it.

Another favorite is Bud, Not Buddy. Many of them can relate to it in some way.

Good luck!

I find that it's best to use your regular teaching materials, and practice using the specific strategies that TNV posted above. I've given...
