Don't push the academics too much

While I understand that you want them to be able to write a little, read simple phonetic books if this is a requirement for next year, I don't understand how the district can expect children to start...

would be my answer.

Is this a fundraiser for the school? Were you asked, or told?

I would respectfully tell the director that you have done your best and have sold X amount to yourself,...

Annual tradition

Why not start an annual tradition. Rather than giving him something tangible, share a special event / day out as a family. It could be the same place / event every year, or it could be a special day...

For personal reasons.

I think that's all you need to say. It would be very rude of anyone to press further.

citizenship and attitude are critical.....

I think you can, and should, tie attitude and citizenship grades into participating in activities. In fact I think those are equally, if not more, relevant than academic grades. Some schools require...
