"Just reading" floors me every time!

Yes, the attitude that the students are "just reading" gets to me every time I hear it. These are supposed to be the literacy experts! Pleasure reading gives more bang for your buck than any...

War against sustained silent reading?

Yesterday, our consultants told us we should create anchor/extension activities for students who finish their work early. I really don't have much down time in my classroom with only 50 minute...

So, true

The level of thinking isn't there with my students either. They are not able to think in a sophisticated manner anymore about the texts they read. Also, we are told to push, push, push expository...

I hate headaches!

I hope you feel better! I get bad headaches once a month like clockwork (pms related), so I can relate. They usually last 24 hours, but I've had them last 48 hours before with nothing relieving...

Ha! Yes!

I've thought that too! How do they get into those consultant positions anyway?

That is the problem I've found. They know theory, but they do not know how to put it into practice in the real...

Consultants

We have several consultants in our district now. They can be helpful, but don't always have the answers as to how to do small group instruction in a 50 minute reading period when most of the...

I agree

I agree! It is not fun anymore. I don't make enough money to be feeling this stressed out and to be working the LONG hours I work. Also, my pay's been frozen for 3 years! I make less this year...

pages

I use pages read in my classroom. They write a reading response over any finished books and even abandoned books to get credit for their pages read.

Crunch Time! What do you do to get ready for the reading TEST

We have 6 weeks to get ready for our State reading test. What do you do when it's crunch time? I teach 6th grade reading to a majority of students reading 2 to 3 years below grade level.

Thanks!

Thank you! It sounds like we're in the same boat as far as our districts go and the state test. I have turned some very reluctant readers onto reading and I also have them write out their answers. ...

Does the prompt...

Does the prompt go with what you are reading aloud? I am guessing that they would have comprehension/vocabulary questions to answer that go with the story?

They are using the spec. ed teachers

They are using the special ed teachers to help administer 6 weeks tests. It is difficult for me and for the spec ed students, because we are to go on teaching as usual, of course, in order to help...

It is our prep periods we are losing

We are not going to have a planning/prep period ALL week long. An entire week without a planning period is most certainly out of compliance with the state. Also, our students will get NO physical...

not new

No, not new, but this phenomena of taking our planning periods away started last year and just hasn't stopped. Because of the poor economy and the fact that experienced teachers have the hardest...

How accurate is the AR/Star Reading Level test?

How accurate do you think the Star reading level test is? It is hard to know when the first 9 weeks a student IRL says 6.0 and then the 2nd test says 4.8 and the 3rd test says 5.5. What's going on...

I always wondered about that!

Rubytunes, I always wondered why all of the "super" teachers never stayed in the classroom. If you are given a gift, shouldn't you keep using it instead of trying to teach others to recreate your...

For those with a 45-50 minute class period-What do you do to build reading skills?

I have only a 50 minute class period with about 21 students in each class. The majority of my students are reading 2 to 3 years below grade level with a sprinkling of on or above grade level in each...

What makes a teacher successful?

Today, teachers are judged by those darned standardized test scores. It can be very disheartening if you teach in a low income, mostly second language students in a town like me.

However, I am...

I like the idea of taking one period a day for fluency workshop, independent reading, ect.... I wonder if fluency only once or twice a week is effective? Maybe fluency half the period and...

After 15 years, feeling ineffective and sick to my stomach over teaching

I love teaching, but it is no longer fun. All of the joy gets zapped out with the pressure of standardized testing, the latest teaching fads, the hoops to jump through, and the growing apathy of the...

I also wanted to be able to recreate what they did! Unfortunately, it's not that easy especially when you already have a family of your own. Sometimes those movies inspire me and other times they...

Yep, today was a crappy Monday

I know what you mean. I'm not feeling so effective today. I try to plan engaging lessons, but the students have to do their part as well. So many are not interested in learning. Still, we are...
