No, it isn't an expectation, but many teachers do provide emergency snacks for kids that come to school hungry and distracted. Many schools have food and clothing pantries that quietly help families without peers noticing.

This line between social services and schools has been crossed, actually more like bulldozed since the first school house opened. Parents and lawmakers seem to feel that teachers and schools are the logical caretakers for the community.
