Clip to ScrapBook #6

I just finished a job where I used the Fry lists for sight words. Note that many of the words are not sight words. The lists were assembled by tabulating how often certain words appeared in certain texts; the more frequent ones are at the top of the list. Anyway, many of the words follow spelling patterns. If you just grab the next 15 on the Fry list, you will have multiple spelling patterns represented on your list, and that doesn't help students learn the patterns. More likely, they'll just memorize, and that's tough to transfer to unknown words. I built spelling lists around a particular pattern and then used the Fry lists as a source of sight words only, so I skipped Fry words that fit a pattern and used only the true sight words as added words on the list. My class was very small, so I individualized each student's sight word list, but I can see how that wouldn't work for a regular classroom. Each student had 5 sight words a week.
