Asynchronous? More like A Sinking Stone R Us...

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Okay, I'll accept that joke was a little (a lot) cheesy.

I teach in an intermediate self-contained class with students with emotional and behavioral disorders. The program is new to me and new to the school, and for the most part new to my students. All of them went to different schools before this year. They are not exhibiting any aggressive behavior, they aren't cussing, or being argumentative. They're just apathetic.

I try as hard as I might to make lessons engaging and exciting, but I end up feeling like Dora the Explorer. You know, asking questions to a implied audience only to be met with silence. Then blinking a couple of times before answering the question yourself. We've had a noticeable decline in consistent attendance of live sessions and an even steeper drop in completion of any asynchronous independent work. Let me first say that the asynchronous work I give to them is presented through a choice board and the majority are game-based. Only two assignments aren't an actual review game (based off IEP goals) they can play.

And again, despite what I feel is my best effort, it's not enough. They won't complete work consistently and oft times not at all. I've tried to find reinforcements that are motivating, but it doesn't keep them motivated. They earn points and earn them frequently for various behaviors and expectations.

I don't know... I'm beating my head against a wall. I'm a good teacher, in person, but I just can't seem to get it going with distance learning.

What are you using in your classrooms that have been successful in motivating your students to complete asynchronous work? How are you assigning asynchronous work? I know I'm not the only one experiencing these issues, but it certainly feels like I'm all alone. Thank you all so much in advance!!
