Author's purpose works well with third graders. You could model through some excerpts of children's books or short texts, give them some guided practice where they could turn and talk after making a decision as to what type of purpose they think the author had, and then when they go to their seats to read independently, you could have them record what the purpose was of the text they are reading and why.
