I just did this with my class and we read Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems. The kids could relate to the "moment" of losing your most important stuffed animal. We focused on writing about a "moment" instead of an event...kept the topic focused and when reading the book, we were able to see how a lot can be written about one moment.
Kids LOVED it....
I did read My Rotten Red-Headed Older Brother by Patricia Polacco - but for Character Analysis instead. Thought is was a little too broad for a personal narrative.....
