Response letters

This year I would like my students to write a response letter to me weekly to demonstrate their comprehension and application of strategy lessons. Does anyone use this type of assessment and if so, would you mind sharing your rubric or how you assess content of the letters. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I teach third grade.
