I grew up in NC and my schools (elementary, middle, and high) all had multiple buildings on each campus but it was all one school with one principal.
Here in my Ohio school district, each school is contained within one single building.
I think the different styles have to do with climate. I'm glad students don't have to travel in and out of buildings to switch classes during the cold Ohio winter. In NC it is generally milder. In my elementary school, classroom doors opened directly to the outside. We had to walk outside to get to the lunchroom, office, auditorium, music classroom, etc.
