Casey Over There is a great picture book about a young boy and his life in the U.S. while his brother is fighting overseas in WWI.
Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt by Deborah Hopkinson and Follow the Drinking Gourd by Jeanette Winter fit into slavery and the underground railroad.
Leah's Pony by Elizabeth Friedrich for the Great Depression - it made me cry.
Peppe the Lamplighter - a boy from an immigrant family whose job is to light streetlamps.
