the student was taught to sound out words, the schwa is often added to consonant sounds when overemphasizing phonics-- /d/ becomes /duh/. I think recording to make him/her more aware of how it sounds is a useful solution.
You might also do some playful work adding /uh/ to initial consonants when you are reading to the student.
Just checking: the kid doesn't add a schwa during speech, right, only during reading?
