Clip to ScrapBook #2

What do you find most frustrating about your job/situation/setting?My biggest frustration is getting teachers to allow me time to work with their students. I would love to have more small groups or individual time, but many teachers don't want to let those students out of their class. With the increase pressures of state testing the upper grades can't "spare" time and the lower grades can't allow students out of core time. I do go into classrooms weekly which is great, but there is no carry over from the teachers. Our state has created SEC standards and our Commissioner of Education is getting ready to make a big announcement about the direction of education in our state. At a meeting I attended he said the role of a school counselor needs to change drastically. That being said I can't make changes with 30 minutes a week with no back up or support. Let's be proactive not reactive. The second frustration is due to the fact I am in a small district I am also our district test coordinator. This means from mid-Feb to the end of the year I am pulled from classroom lessons.

What do you like best about your job? I love that I am involved with every student K-8. I know all their names and the interaction in the hallways is great. To my Kindergarteners and first graders I am like a rock star. They truly miss me when I don't come to their classroom for my weekly visit.

What has been really challenging? Finding a lessons or curriculum that makes a difference with our students. The materials I was left with were very out dated. I know teachers have a hard time engaging students in everyday classroom subjects, it is really hard with the content I have to teach.

How much support/collaboration do you get, and from who? My administration is awesome. I have full support and trust in judgement with both my principals and my superintendent. This is my 7th year and we are on our 4th principal at the Middle School, but he trusts my judgement and often asks for my opinion and respects it whether he uses it or likes what I have to say.
