I'm so glad you found your cat. This happened Toni's once when we had central air vent installed in our house. I put the cat into a cardboard carrier so he couldn't get out of the house. I did not expect the workers to leave my door open like they did and the cardboard carrier was all I had. He was so scared he shredded the carrier in a matter of moments and disappeared. He stayed missing for a very long time after the workers left. I was also afraid the cat left the house and might not return. I learned that some cats can get very scared or just annoyed and go hide. Maybe next time you can put your cat into a quiet, cozy room while you have little visitors. That's assuming the cat won't tear down the closed door trying to get out (My cat would have).
One of my daughter's cats hides daily in cabinets and sometimes she can't find him and gets worried. Another cat of hers is constantly getting shut in closets. He doesn't always appear when they look in the closet either.
Cats really are good at hiding when they want a break or become frightened.
