Management? Or discipline?

If you're talking about classroom management (rather than discipline), for second graders, in my experience, the biggest thing you have to get a handle on is helping kids get organized (having and finding supplies, books, homework, notes, etc.) and following directions when they are given. Establishing and reinforcing good habits.

As far as strategies, I make everything into a "game". Pack your backpack game. Clean out your desk game. Pass in your homework game. Follow directions game. Check your folder game. Have teams or groups or rows and see which team can be first to be packed up for example. BTW, I make sure every group "wins". The last group to get packed up is the "fourth winner". Congratulate everyone. There are never any prizes, and the kids don't care. Just keep it positive and fun.
