Alright I wasn't sure whether to post this on the substitute board or on this one, since this question has more to do with private schools I figured I would post it here since this board is more related to private schools.

I'm basically wondering how you go about finding jobs at private schools? I am currently getting ready to take the certifications to be a substitute teacher, and eventually want to be a FT teacher, and wouldn't mind teaching or subbing at a private school (I actually went to one from grades K-8) but unlike the public school districts who post the open jobs on their website none of the private schools near where I am seem to even have an 'employment' page.

Do they post them somewhere else that I don't know about? or do you just have to call around and see what you can find?

Also does anyone happen to know how subbing works at private schools? do they use the same services public schools do like AESOP or do they use a different method?

I've know private schools to post their positions on their websites..usually they have a link somewhere on the school page. Good luck!!

Check out the NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) website. They post positions for Private Schools from all over the county and even overseas.

If you are familiar with the local private schools (already know where they are, etc.), you can always go by and ask for an employment application. That is what I did when I taught in a private school previously. In the one where I will be working this fall, my children have been in preschool there, so I have already been in the school as a parent volunteer and currently as a sub.

As for sub lists, again, you would need to contact the school directly. The private school where I taught previously maintained a sub list for people who were willing to substitute teach. The one where I am subbing now uses their rotating teacher's aides as subs first, and then they call me when they need a second sub. They mostly handle it in-house, though. It really varies from school to school.

That's what people do around here. We have a file of applications and will be hiring 3 new teachers next year...young school having major growing pains.
After you give them your application, check back in later and let them know you're still interested.

I got my position because I was working part time at the school (answering the phone) and was in the building the day a teacher quit. She quit on Friday and I started on Monday.

We also keep a sub list of those willing to do the job, but the list is short in our area. Our school board has the last say, but they haven't refused anybody, as far as I know. We even have a listing of who not to have sub.

My school is accredited through ACSI and sometimes they post job openings on that site. But many of our hires have come through subs. Just go to the school and ask about subbing.

If you want to apply to Catholic schools you will probably have to go through your diocese or archdiocese website. They should at least have openings listed there and contact info. Good luck in your job search!

In August I opened up the phone book and called every private school that was listed and asked what their needs would be for the next year. I ended up on the sub list for three schools! If I were to do it again I would start in Feb / march when they start renewing contracts.

I went to the website the school I am most interested in and they didn't have anything about employment (or even volunteering) on the site at all..they do have a contact page with email addresses for the administrators/principals listed...would it be appropriate to e-mail them? I dont know if it makes any difference but this is a Christian school, my main reason for particularly wanting to sub there is that I went there from K-8th grade and loved it, though any subbing job at this point would be awesome working at this particular school would be great for me.

I wouldn't even mind volunteering to get my foot in the door, but I didn't even see anything on the schools site about that except for PTA/Parents.

Who should I send the e-mail to if the site lists multiple administrators? It doesn't specify an HR person or anything like that but it does have the principals/vice principals e-mails listed on the site but I wasn't sure if I should e-mail the principal or one of the VPs

If I were going to email, I would email the principal, but I still think going by in person is a better option.

Thanks...I may end up going by in person, but I figured e-mailing my resume may be better. I may wait until I finish my Effective Teacher Training class since then I will actually be certified as a substitute teacher for my counties public schools and since I dont have a degree or anything yet besides a HS Diploma (Degree is actively in progress) I may not have a shot at subbing at this point yet.
