Activities for Georgia Unit

Hi,
I am looking for ideas to teach Georgia's rivers and regions. Most of the resources I have found are too difficult for my students. I did check the frameworks and found a couple ideas but that was it. I would appreciate any ideas you have. Thank you.

Carole Marsh has 22 page booklets for each grade level, correlated to the Georgia Performance Standards.

We just finished studying the regions of Georgia. We discussed one region per day and then added on to our map of Georgia representing each region with a different color of play dough. We asked parents to send in home made play dough. Hope this helps!!

Sounds like fun! Thanks for the idea. Did you do anything for the rivers?

Rivers

We have laminated maps of Georgia so we just had the kids trace the rivers with a vis-a-vi marker as we talked about them. In groups, we had the kids come up with ways to remember where each river was.

Exchange?

I really do believe that much of the geography in the GPS (Georgia Performance Skills) are above the students' development, but I had considered having a postcard exchange with classes around the state. Wouldn't it be neat to have a giant Georgia map with postcards from all over? Although students might not "get" it all, they might connect those pictures with the regions--especially if they have visited some of those places.

(I said that I "had considered" because I am now a media specialist--but i'm having withdrawal symptoms from 2nd grade--I LOVE 2nd grade!)

That sounds like a great idea. Maybe I can ask the parents and teachers if they know of someone we can write, so we can get postcards from different areas of the state. I agree with the standards being above their level. We are teaching standards that third grade taught. It is very difficult to find activities for Ga. on a beginning 2nd Grade level. Thanks for your idea. I too love 2nd Grade. I've been teaching it for 26 years and love it!
