I was back in a first grade class today, where the teacher requested me after I subbed for her a few weeks ago. Most of the kids are wonderfully cooperative, but there are always a couple... One little girl who is mouthy, disrespectful, and 'always in trouble' (per the other 1st grade teachers) created a 'situation' today. I lined the kids up, took them to one of the hallways where the restrooms are, and proceeded to send them in two at a time. In this school, the teachers also send kids to another hallway's restrooms to speed up the process. I thought things were going very well. I usually say something like "let's see if you can show me how very quiet you can be and how quickly we can be back in the classroom". They were quietly standing in line waiting their turn, when up comes a woman I've not met, with little 'susie q' in tow. She gets in my face and proceeds to read me the riot act about how "this child was running in and out of the boys bathroom and yelling and throwing wet paper towels at the boys and I could hear her all the way in the library".

She went on to tell me that I had better have more control over these children!

I found out later she was the librarian. The library is right next to the restrooms. Mind you... I am a fully licensed teacher with more than 25 years under my belt. I do not, however, have superhuman hearing. (When I related this story to my husband he laughed and said "why didn't you just tell the old bag to back off"!) I couldn't believe that I was being yelled at. I felt like one of the kids! I thanked her and escorted the class back to the room. I was so dumbstruck I couldn't think of how else to respond to her. Subs get no respect!
