I was back in a first grade class today, where the teacher requested me after I subbed for her a few weeks ago. Most of the kids are wonderfully cooperative, but there are always a couple... One little girl who is mouthy, disrespectful, and 'always in trouble' (per the other 1st grade teachers) created a 'situation' today. I lined the kids up, took them to one of the hallways where the restrooms are, and proceeded to send them in two at a time. In this school, the teachers also send kids to another hallway's restrooms to speed up the process. I thought things were going very well. I usually say something like "let's see if you can show me how very quiet you can be and how quickly we can be back in the classroom". They were quietly standing in line waiting their turn, when up comes a woman I've not met, with little 'susie q' in tow. She gets in my face and proceeds to read me the riot act about how "this child was running in and out of the boys bathroom and yelling and throwing wet paper towels at the boys and I could hear her all the way in the library". She went on to tell me that I had better have more control over these children! I found out later she was the librarian. The library is right next to the restrooms. Mind you... I am a fully licensed teacher with more than 25 years under my belt. I do not, however, have superhuman hearing. (When I related this story to my husband he laughed and said "why didn't you just tell the old bag to back off"!) I couldn't believe that I was being yelled at. I felt like one of the kids! I thanked her and escorted the class back to the room. I was so dumbstruck I couldn't think of how else to respond to her. Subs get no respect!

Theres is no reason for a teacher to get right in your face over ANYTHING.

A year or so ago I subbed in a high school science class where all the teacher left me to do was a couple of worksheets. In the first class I taught, the kids worked on them together and were talking...but not loudly. I started to go over the worksheets and all of a sudden the teacher from the adjoining room came bursting through the door and started SCREAMING at the class! She told them they were being disrespectful etc. I looked at her like she was crazy and so did the kids! After she left, the kids gave me a look that said "What was that???" I told them that they were doing fine and that there was no reason for her to come in and do that!!!

Of course she didn't come in and yell at the class that needed to be yelled at!

That is one of my biggest peeves...when other teachers come in and yell at me, talk down to me...or my class that i'm subbing for.

I absolutely agree. One of the worst experiences I ever had started because the teacher across the hall butted into my classroom and the kids just were never the same. They don't, however, get in my face as I am a very big man and can look intimidating if I want. Still it is amazing how some of these little women butt into other people's business.
Also I have had the occasion to walk by their classroom's later and it is borderline out of control. Hypocrites.

same here....a teacher comes in screaming at the top of her lungs at a class (5th grade)I was subbing for..apparently...she was the only one who said my class was the loudest...uhhh...there was another class right behind ours (and it has only a partition)....go figure!!!

On top of that, she goes on to complain that her kids are taking a test and they can hear us...why don't you just close your door???!!!! To boot, her class is parallel to ours .....!!!

Ever since then, we just don't bother with each other....she's the type to come in the room and just take over whenever there's a sub there...doesn't think that the regular teacher has left notes and assignments and that a sub can handle the material

I am new to subbing this year, but this is utter nonsense. One adult taking the inventory of another adult's charge is ridiculous. Why on earth would someone assume that they had the right to step in like that? Would they be receptive to that kind of treatment?

It makes me think of when my kids say to one another: "You're not the boss of me!!"

I can't stand this type of behavior... She had no right to speak to you that way! Sorry this happened to you... I'll share a funny story..about the same topic

A few weeks ago I was subbing in a 2nd grade class. I had just dropped them off in the lunchroom and was walking back to the classroom. As I was walking back there was a group of kids with another teacher who were being loud..I assumed they were all hers so I didn't say anything...then all of the sudden, I hear "My class, and Mr. teacher who I was in for class need to be quiet in the hallway". I quickly turned around because I didn't have my class at all... they were at lunch I gave her a funny, confused look and was about to say something to her when part of the group ran ahead of us and into their room...She smiled and said "I guess they weren't part of your class...I guess it is just my class that is creating the commotion"... We both laughed... I guess that's what happens when you assume

Trying to coopt a sub's class reflects the unwarranted huge egos some teachers and principals have. I've had it happen too and I really believe that these people undermine my authority with the students under the guise of being helpful.

These women *and men* are nothing more than petty tyrants who lack the empathy gene and don't know how to interact properly with other adults.

The thing I dislike the most about being a sub is that I feel very vulnerable--I know we are scrutinized and that there are jerky teachers who feel superior (for no good reason other than circumstance) and who get an ego-hit by lording it over subs.
