Super Star Sub

I had a sub this week that was just a superstar! He came in on Friday to introduce himself. Everything I wrote out was done, or he left me notes where they left off. He followed the attendance and USED the incentive system...he EVEN (and I didn't ask him to!) wrote out Missing Work notices for the absentees and sorted papers.

He was absolutely, totally ME for the last two days and I LOVED IT!

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how I could let him know that? I'd love to request him again, and would love to thank him! He's the best sub I've had so far!

If you have his e-mail address I'm sure he'd like a quick note of appreciation. Requesting him again is better. If you already have a date in mind when you'll be out, contact him and tell him how impressed you were and when you'll need him again.

I get teachers who request me again, but having one of them tell me what a great job I did would mean the world to me.

Call him

Can't you get his phone number from the administration to contact him directly? Especially if it's to ask him to sub for you again. If your system is computerized don't you have access to his phone number (sometimes that is the sub's ID number)? The praise would be great, especially since we get virtually no feedback.

Yes, I have an idea. You could send him your total pay for the two days you were gone. You did say "He was absolutely, totally ME for the last two days and I LOVED IT"
He was you in all ways, but one; the pay he received. He must be new. I used to do that. After awhile he won't knock himself out like that. I am not trying to be mean, but just pointing out a fact.

A few ideas :)

I love hearing stories like this Thank you for sharing such a positive story If you have his email address, you could send him a note (or call him of you don't). I am sure he would appreciate the feedback. As a substitute, we don't often get a lot of feedback. Also, you could help him by letting your principal know what a great job he did/letting other teachers know about him. If you do decide to recommend him to other teachers or let the principal know about him, I'm sure he would like to know that as well

Hope this was helpful!!

You are a hoot. Thank you for the chuckle.
And Miss ESL, thanks for noticing everything your sub did.
I've knocked myself out to do everything I could and some teachers find fault no matter what, and only notice the one thing I did not do, rather than all the great things I did do. Mostly though, I never hear anything. This is a real limbo job.

You know I try to be a super sub most days - although I totally get what Augustus is saying (I also want to add that I love your posts Augustus - you always make me smile!) Don't ask me why I like to go above and beyond - I just like to do the best that I can do.

That said - I'm not always successful. Like yesterday used the wrong marker on a wipe-board - so I couldn't wipe it off - sighhhhhh - luckily I've been an idiot before and knew to take it off with pure alcohol gotten from the nurse!

I would LOVE IT - if just ONCE a teacher gave a little thank you pressie - like a card and a baggie of chocolate kisses. Nothing major - just to show that she noticed the job I did - appreciated it - and went out of her way to thank me. Also - just once - I would love to be INCLUDED in Teacher's Appreciation Week.

Still - I do feel loved and appreciated at the school I work the most at since everyone tries to get on my schedule and seems disappointed when they have to "settle" for someone else. A full schedule really does show that people notice that you know what you are doing.

qudiva-the marker trick

Ah, the sinking feeling of writing on the white board with the wrong pen!
A class of fourth graders showed me a neat trick. If you write over the paper marker with the white board marker, it will 'erase' the marks made so they can just be wiped up.
Try it!

Email him or write him a note. Yes, better pay would be Wonderful, but I like hearing when teachers appreciate the job I've done.

another idea

Other then contacting him directly another idea is to send out a staff email letting the school know that he did a great job for you. I had a teacher do this for me and I thank her every chance I get. Because of her email I have been kept busy by the teachers in that building. Also make sure your principal knows he did a great job so if he is wanting a teaching position for next year he has a good word in the district.

It sounds like he didn't leave a way for you to contact him so that's one thing Superstar Sub might want to start doing in his note -- leave an email address and/or phone number. I always make sure to leave my email address so the teacher has a way to reach me with compliments, lol. Really though, I always leave it in case the teacher has any questions.

Hope you've been able to reach him by now. I'm sure he'd appreciate the positive feedback.

Thanks everyone!

I did get a chance to contact him. Well-apparently you cannot contact them directly. So I sent him a note through the secretaries who set up subs in the first place. I told hi mI appreciated his subbing and that I would like to request him again. So he stopped by the other day to thank ME for appreciating him, and to give me his contact information, so that I could request him through the secretaries.

It's hard to get a sub, due to being ESL. They're all afraid they will walk into foreign language land, and are always surprised by the proficiency level of the students. :-) I wanted to hold on to this one.
