LTS need ideas!

I just got an LTS HS science position that starts on Monday, Nov 9. I decided that since I don't know any of the students I would forget about science for the day and just have fun getting to know each other. Does anyone have any easy, fun getting to know you activities for HS students?

Take a look at Wong's First Days of School. There are MANY great ideas. One I've done that was fun was going around the room and telling your favorite "cheesy" movie. It breaks the ice and you also find out a little bit about the kids. Of course, you have to be prepared with your own nomination for a great, cheesy movie. Mine was The Sound of Music.

I think your idea is great, but I would consider doing this on the second or third day, not the first. They will see you as a sub, (and we all know how HS kids treat subs! ) and if you come in the first day being playful, instead of laying the groundwork of "this is what I expect" you may have a very tough time. But...that is how I would approach it. YMMV!

I am not sure if the previous teacher left any lesson plan for monday or not. I was going to conduct business first, such as review the class rules, tell them my expectations etc. Since I have 90 minutes, I didn't want to bore the kids to death with housekeeping details all period.

Good plan! Have a great first day... and come back and let us know (vicariously!) how it went.
