Inferencing Books

My kids are REALLY not getting inferencing based on a text. They are getting inferencing from pictures, and I've tried the "What's in my teacher's bag" activity and it went wonderfully. But, when it comes to interpreting a text, I am getting nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions for stories to use to help my students inference? Or strategies that work? Thanks in advance!

I read a bunch of poems by Georgia Heard (from pt) and Douglas Florian (school library). I also have students infer when a book has an open ending. I hope this helps!

Charlie Anderson. It's about a cat that you think is pregnant (infer) and later find out he is living with 2 different families. I give out tickets to each student. They can only ask one question and hand in their ticket. I record all questions. Then we go back and decide if the book answered our question or if we had to infer them.
