Our district is moving towards the advanced content model for GT and I am on the team that will be reviewing, modifying, etc. our policy and plan of action.

With this model, only high achievers(so they can be monitored for possible referral if needed) and qualified GT are placed in an endorsed teacher's classroom at each grade level. Do any of you work for schools who do it this way? What do you use to help determine those high achievers so that the right kids are placed in those classrooms? We have the GT criteria/testing, but we are trying to determine how to identify the high achievers. Is there a screener/rubric you use that you would be willing to share or can give examples of what is included? Thanks so much for your help/suggestions!

To place students in an Advanced Content class that are not gifted, the best thing to do is look at end of year assessments. You can also place students based on classroom grades, but end of year assessments are easiest to use. You can also use any other screeners like reading assessments and math assessments online that you may use to determine placement in higher level math classes or reading levels (like STAR 360, Achieve 3000, etc.) Just be careful that you do not fill up the class- you will need a little wiggle room to place a gifted child in that classroom that may transfer in later in the year.
