Need an office? There is one behind the circulation desk but since there wasn't a librarian last year our parent liaison took it as her office. My principal says its up to me if I want the office back. Part of me does, but I don't want to make anyone mad. Does your librarian have an office? What is it used for?

I use mine before and after school- I am doing library lessons pretty much non-stop all day. It is also where I keep my (paper)files, personally purchased professional books, and a few personal items. My office is also right in the open, on the way to a high-traffic copier and microwave. I definitely want and use mine.

Maybe in the name of peace, you could arrange a table/workspace for the liaison?

Even if you don't use it as an office, you do need a place where things can be left unfinished, where they won't get disturbed until you can get back to them. I'm losing both an office and store room-I have no idea where I'm going to keep all my teaching materials or other items needed but not used frequently.

"Need" is a relative term...

but since it is behind the counter you lose the privacy in both spaces. If it were me, I'd reclaim it as my mine/part of the library. They can find her another place.

I just started a new school (#3) and all three have had a nice office space behind the circulation desk for the Librarian's use.

It is a state requirement for us (MS) that we have an office.

Unless the parent liason repairs books and does checkout and shelving, take it back.

Rule #1: If you have a wonderful library clerk that does a ton and can do it, make them happy.
Rule #2: you are using all of your space, budget, materials and time on library tasks.

Protect your stuff. Keep a log or schedule that reflects that you are using all your "free" time for things like cataloging, planning, placing orders, etc. And make sure they know what and how the space is used for like how this cabinet is used for books needing processing this shelf is for pd stuff, this is for programming, etc.

I didn't get my office back...so the circulation desk is my only space. I don't have an aide. I don't have time to get books back on the shelf and teach classes, but I do hear all the laughter in the parent liaison's office with her parent volunteers and when I've asked for some parents to help me put books back on the shelf they are always too busy doing her stuff (whatever that may be)...Frustrated...
