Novel Study

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hello-
I will be teaching a whole class novel, Backwater (Bauer) next month. I only have the month of December to complete the novel, but I can implement the lessons however I'd like. There are enough novels for every student, therefore their reading is done at night and discussions and activities are done in class. I have 2 groups for 80 minutes and one group for 40 minutes.

I have taught novels in the past, but haven't engaged in discussions. Any suggestions for discussion? The students are not very interested in reading and I'm afraid I'll get no discussion.
Also, I've read about a reading matrix, but I'm not sure exactly what this is. I was thinking of making some type of graphic organizer for each reading which would have them write about a literary device used, character development, etc. Are there any out there that I can build off of?
Thanks
Mrs.Mino
