I currently have a 3rd grade cluster class and will be looping with them to 4th. I would love to have a more student centered classroom next year. Has anyone implemented this successfully and offer tips?

Can you be more specific? Are you looking to implement it across the board? In a specific subject? Do you want to give them choices regarding what they learn or how they learn? Are you looking to implement something like Genius Hour or something that has a broader focus?

Have you read The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Milller? It's a great roadmap for giving students choices when it comes to reading. All students benefit from this type of student-centered instruction: They want to read because they're choosing what to read and if you're conferencing with students you're focusing on the needs of that student.

I'd focus on a single area and get comfortable doing it well. Be prepared for epic failures (ask me how I know!) and amazing successes. As I began to dip my toe into going more student centered, I was honest with my kids and told them that if something didn't work, I needed to know it. Kids can also be brutally honest, so I had to develop a bit of a thick skin.

Lastly, if you do decide to focus just on one area and you do reading, building in a Genius Hour (a quick Google search will yield plenty of suggestions) into reading is easily done. In order to pull off their projects students will have to read, will have to learn how to really read nonfiction and what to do when they don't understand something.

Good luck!

Thank you so much. I just read about Genius Hour today and it sounds like something I would love to incorporate into my classroom!

I would also recommend you look into the Responsive Classroom approach. If you can't attend one of their workshops, they have some great resources on their website for how to make your classroom more student-centered.
