Set your expectations and model. Point out correct behaviors. Stop activity if students can't handle with exaggerated sadness "wow, I hate you could complete xyz today due to ...."

Agreed! I also am very strategic about my groups. And I might sit with a group that I know will need a little more encouragement to stay on task.

We also ease into group activities. I need to see that they can work with a partner first, and then grow the groups from there.
