Help! Demo lesson for elem to middle ela & ss

Hi there,

I need to give a 30 minute demo lesson for both an ELA lesson and a social studies lesson, so 2 demo lessons. I've taught 2nd and 4th, and am so excited to move up but am struggling to come up with demo lesson ideas!! They just have to meet a common core standard of my choice.

How do you typically structure MS lessons so they can be interactive and interesting to the kids, yet stay in control without boosting chatting??

TIA

Sorry, I've never had to do a demo lesson. I do teach both of these subjects. At my school, we have a set curriculum so I have no freedom in really teach either in an engaging way anymore. Can you find out some things or topics that they actually teach at this school? Maybe ask or email some of the teachers? For observations, my admin. likes to see:

*Posted objectives/standards
*Objectives and standards in introduced in "kid language"
*Some pre-assessment (can be a self-assessment) about the topic (In LA, pre-reading guide)
*Video clips or activity to introduce (a warm-up/entrance ticket)
*Instruction
*Add some group or partner time (if reading, they like some choices)
*Check over work
*Some type of self-assessment to a rubric or checklist
*An exit slip or some type of assessment of objectives

They will ask how will differentiate for special needs. How will you challenge higher level learners/gifted? How will you use the exit slips to shape instruction? (Answer: you will pull aside students who did poorly and remediate them. In reality, there is no time for this.)

Btw, it is almost impossible to fit this all into an hour. They might give you 20 minutes. We used to have to write this up in a formal lesson plan. Ours love the Understanding by Design format.

Thank you so much! What do the pre-reading guides look like in your class?

I used to give students our "purpose" for reading. Then, we would look at the title, illustrations, vocabulary and make a prediction on what the piece might be about.

For reading, you can also use statements that students might agree or disagree with that relate to the story.

In ss, I would use a K-W-L (know-want to know-learned)...

I'm sure others might have some great ideas out there. I always thought some hands-on sensory writing idea might be good for a demo. However, I know we are more focused on argumentative or informational writing due to state testing.

Hope you have some great interviews! Let us know how it goes.
