Hi. I'm planning a demo lesson on Cesar Chavez. My plan is to read Harvesting Hope aloud to the class then have them do a follow-up activity...Perhaps write about something they hope to do to make the world a better place....

I'm worried this is not age-appropriate for 5th graders. Any advice greatly appreciated....and any other ideas would be welcomed!

I haven't read the book but I know the author. What is the objective or focus for your lesson? Are you supposed to be teaching them about Cesar Chavez the person (as a historical figure) or modeling and teaching nonfiction reading strategies or working on a writing activity?
