Hi Title I Teachers and Interventionists!

Please tell us: What is something you teach every year that you particularly look forward to and why?

What intervention strategy do you use that you find to be effective?

I really enjoy teaching students strategies for reading difficult words, especially when they start using them!

Word work has always shown good progress for students. Whether it be Elkonin boxes, Words Their Way, or new Boost and Blast, word work improves their reading.

I look forward to teaching students the real meaning behind dividing fractions (Not just keep, change flip) I know it works! That light bulb moment is amazing!

I find that students learn best with project based learning for interventions. Before launching a small project I do have some direct instruction and small group activities (NCTM is great for these).

Junior Literacy Coach (Rookie Year)

Eighth Year of teaching, 1st year as a Literacy Coach.

My school has two literacy coaches and I'm the Junior Literacy Coach. Our school has a one of the kind literacy lab in which the students get a 20 minute carpet lesson, 15-20 minutes in centers and 20 minutes fluency. I teach 30 classes in K-2 every week and i'm having an absolute blast with it. My most successful lesson on the carpet has been the details lesson in which the we do a hand motion explaining details as well as I start with the students thinking of a pizza and all the little things about the pizza (the toppings) the kids get it and get a kick out of the carpet lesson. I use puppets to teach their weekly skill and it varies by grade level but the kids also show concern for the puppets and it's really cute.

As for the lab, we are the only one in our state and it's an awesome environment and setting to work in. My mentor and senior literacy coach, works with the teachers and strategies to teach literacy and I work with the students. He ran the lab for the past ten years and it has been very successful, one that I hope to copy if and when I move to a different state. I'm so glad I attended every single lesson he ever did because the model he set up for the lab is the exact same model. I have had no pressures put on me this year other than I'm also our writing coach, which ties into our K-2 Literacy Themed Elementary this year.

Can you provide more specifics about your "detail" lesson using their hands and how you incorporate the puppets? Are there any videos or pics available? Thanks!
