Applying for school librarian position

Hi all,

I have been approached by school principal to apply for librarian position. I have an elementary ed degree. Just curious how big a task is running the library? I suppose it is just as much work as running a classroom, except you have a new class coming in all the time? I haven't been employed for the past two years full time, so this would be a nice change. But coming in with no experience, I'm concerned where I would even start. Also, I would be in charge of Extended Learning Program groups.
Thanks for any feedback!

Some school libraries ran by certified librarians-hard to do now that school is out! In the mean time, School Library Journal is on line, start reading it. Running a library looks easy, but is not. It is the best job in the school.in addition to running a classroom, you are also administrating a library. You need to know about cataloging and OPAC systems, have an extensive knowledge of childrens' lit, research skills, evaluation skills, and more.

I have a teaching degree, and a Masters in library. If you take this position, start taking library courses-like I said-best job in the School!

Tarita,

The school principal has faith in you and is offering you a wonderful opportunity! Go for it! I am a trained media specialist and know that there are sources of information you can use to get started. Hartford County Schools in Maryland has this guide: https://www.hcps.org/departments/doc...taryschool.pdf.

There are other guides in other school systems; your county system may even have a .pdf curriculum guidelines for each grade level. You can also talk with other media specialists/learning commons librarians/ in your area to find out the script they are following.

You will use short class times of 35-45 minutes to teach students how to use the library and eventually do research properly. This happens over a period of time. Each librarian is unique as is the Learning Commons and school system. Have a talk with your principal. Google all your concerns. You are going to have fun!
