Tell us: What is something that you teach every year in any grade that you particularly look forward to, and why?

I read Thanksgiving at the Tappletons by Eileen Spinelli to every grade, every year. It has become a school tradition.

For anyone that is interested, this book has just been re-released and is available again. https://www.harpercollins.com/978006...the-tappletons

I the middle school. I do a lesson on Genre with the 6th graders. It always makes them excited about trying something new. I also enjoy the discussions they have about why a book is a particular genre.

Book Care with 5th Grade

Clip to ScrapBook #3

By the time my students get into fifth grade, they have heard a lot of book care lessons. I was looking for something new so I decided to use the picture book The Day The Crayons Quit as a mentor text. We read some of the letters and then they had to write a letter from the point of view of the damaged book. I put them into groups of three so that they could support each other.

Why should I learn to read?

My kindergarten classes always enjoy The Little old Man Who Could Not Read by Irma Seymour Black. We start off by talking about why reading is important, not only when you are in school, but also as an adult. In this book, a man cannot read but must go to the grocery store himself while his wife is out of town. The kids love trying to guess what is really in the boxes and cartons that he gets instead of what he thought he was buying.

I love telling a good creepy story. And then we discuss genre (folklore or horror) and I have even had kids research and write their own. But I love telling them and then having the younger siblings of kids who said they don't get into ghost stories talk to me two days later and say "so and so said tell you told the best story..."

Jo_11992, I love that idea of writing from the point of view of a damaged book. I will definitely do this at my new school library.
