New Teacher!

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I just landed my first teaching job (1st grade)! Yay!

I will go in Monday to sign my contract and tour the school, and I wanted to make sure I came with a list of questions about the school and the upcoming year.

Of course I want to know when I can start prepping my room! , about the curriculum guide, evaluation of new teachers, etc. But I am hoping that I could get suggestions from fellow teachers about things they wish they had known or asked their supervisor before beginning their first year teaching!

Thank you so much!

Congratulations on your new job!
*Be sure to ask what classroom supplies will be provided by the school. (Office supplies. Construction paper, writing paper, bulletin board paper, die cut letters, etc)
*What supplies are students required to bring? (Basic school supplies, folders, kleenex, clorex wipes, etc)
*What curriculum supplies are available? (Math manipulative, science supplies, leveled readers, etc)
*What is the policy on treats and celebrations?

Find out what isn't provided before buying anything.

HAVE FUN!

And congratulations! First grade is the best!

I would ask if you could get in touch with your teammates, and if you'll have an official mentor. I agree with finding out what is provided before you buy anything.

I would go easy on decorations- the trend is to build the classroom with your students, using anchor charts and their work to decorate the room.

Glad you've joined us- this is a wonderful place to hang out!

Find out if you can throw things out that might be left in your room.
You might want to find out what the policy is on putting things up in your room. In some cities, the fire code restricts the amount of paper that can be on the wall.
Check to see if you have a budget to buy things that you will need.

I have been in first grade for 5 years now and I LOVE it! PP's covered it all, but of course, you do want to know if and when you can get your class list! For us, we don't have access to it until the middle of August. And definitely, connecting with teammates if possible, can be an enormous help! Welcome to first grade!!!
