Getting to know you activities

Clip to ScrapBook #1

So... Our district is consolidating this year, and will be bringing together all classrooms in grades 3-5. I teach 4th grade, and have always had students who knew me, but this year will be different! There will be 9 sections (down from 11!), coming from 4 different buildings. I am looking for some getting to know you/team building activities. We were told we would have about 25 students. Thanks in Advance.

Introductions

Introduce a new friend:
Students are paired off with someone coming some from a different school. They have 4 minutes to interview each other and find out some interesting things. Then they have to introduce their new friend to the class.

Find someone who...:
I think these can be found on line. They have questions like "find someone who has a cat, find someone who was born in a another state" etc. Students mingle around and talk to each other until they have found someone that fits each category (can't use anyone twice)

Speed-friending:
Set up chairs facing each other (over desks, a circle inside a circle, whatever is easiest). You get 2 minutes to talk to the person across from you, then one side moves, and you talk to a new person, etc.

Me in a bag:
Each student puts a few things in a bag that represent them, and does a show-and-tell sort of presentation.

Art gallery introduction:
Use "all about me" posters (or any substitute - paper plates are fun) and have students include their name, a photo, and a few things about themselves. Hang them up art gallery style, and give students time to look at each other's. This makes a good series of movement breaks between subjects if you break it up.

Solo Cup Challenge

I have a great one that my students LOVE. There's a video called "Solo Cup Challenge" on Youtube...and I do show it to my class prior to doing the activity ourselves. It's all about teamwork, and I take my class to the big tables in our cafeteria. They have to talk strategy and communicate clearly. Once they build their pyramid I have them go the opposite direction and take it down. Then they are allowed to build whatever they like with any time left. It's a winner. I save my cups/string from year to year but find that the rubber bands may need to be replaced as they tend to become weak over the hot summer in my closet.
