Book Reviews

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I must confess I don't do enough writing in my classroom. Book Reviews may be a good place for me to focus energy this year. I wondered, does anyone encourage book reviews, and if you do what is your criteria or framework for the paragraph? Do you have a requirement for number they must complete for you in a month or year?

Thank you.

I used book reviews when I taught third grade. Students had to include-

the title
the author
the genre
a one to three sentence summary
make a connection or ask an insightful question
and an opinion plus why

Also they were not allowed to spoil the book for others by telling specifically how it ended.

I modeled how to do this several times using picture book read alouds. Then we did a few together as a class writing while I was the scribe on the document camera. Then they did their own.

I did not have a specific number that they had to do per month.

I just posted about this on a reading log thread. Maybe it will help:

My class does a monthly book talk in front of the class... so about one or two students each day presents. They also post about the book on our class book blog (using the Kidblog.org website). Some kids even log in to comment on other posts. The nice thing about the site is that now that I have done it for a couple years now, my new class can view all of the book recommendations from previous years.

Check out Spaghetti Book Club. It's a great site with kid written book reviews.
