Going from 3rd to 5th Grade with 29 Students!

Clip to ScrapBook #1

After teaching 3rd grade for 8 years, I was moved to fifth. I am looking for any advice on making the transition.
However I am especially grateful for tips on:

- Being efficient- I have never taught this many students before and have a
baby plus 2 young children.

- Science, I work at a STEAM school and students need to prepare for
science state test

- Read Aloud and guided reading book suggestions (I am really in to realistic
fiction, historical fiction, suspense- basically everything but science-fi and
fantasy)

- Managing and setting up a small room with 29 big bodies
Thank

Mr Peabody's Apples is a great read aloud for fifth graders. It sounds too young but it is not. It teaches a good lesson about gossip. It was written by Madonna. It is a longer picture book not a chapter book.

I transitioned last year from 2nd to 5th with 28 kiddos. I think the best advice I can give is treat them exactly like you did your 3rd graders at the beginning of the year. Make everything explicit and don't assume too much (unless you are familiar with the school).

As far as seating goes, you want to be as flexible as possible. They still love sitting on the carpet and listening to stories.

I hope this helps and I know you'll have a great year!

I second the Wonder suggestion. All our fifth grade teachers read it to their students.

Since you like sci-fi/fantasy, a newer book my sixth graders LOVED is Fires of Invention by Jeffrey Scott Savage. I had multiple students going after the next one in the series.
