What are you looking forward to this school year? New classroom? Is third a new grade level for you? You have a great team to work with? New principal or one you love working with? I am just curious and hopeful that everyone has something they are looking forward to. Please share.

I wasn't sure about returning this year but felt l was supposed to stay another year. (I'm at a private school and I had an opportunity to go to another and make more money) I do like my team that I'm working with and I agree with the vision of the school. I have a small 3rd grade class this year and I'm looking forward to changing some things up from last year. The second grade teacher did a great job preparing the kids (she was new last year). I'm not quite ready for summer to be over, it's been very busy and we are sending our last off to college in a few weeks so it will be a very different year for us at home.

New principal

While I know I will miss my principal that just retired, I am super excited to be working with "the new guy!" He is known to others in the district who worked in his previous district, and they can't say enough good things about him. Everyone says he is extremely nice, kind, and relaxed.

In my limited interactions I found him to be warm and fuzzy, gracious, and he had an easy smile. Time will tell how effective he is, but I like him as a person already. I think we're going to have a great year!

Sorry I mislead you, I'm staying at the same school. I had an chance to go to a different private school for more money and shorter commute too but didn't feel right about the move. I should have 12 students in my class this year.

I'm looking forward to my new reading curriculum! Last year my principal and I spent several days at the Bob Jones University conference. While there I got to look at their reading curriculum, and I really liked it. My principal agreed to get it for me, and I really feel like my reading lessons are going to be more enjoyable for both myself & my kids.

I am going to up the STEMification in my classroom by adding some additional activities throughout my curriculum all year long. I have some good ideas.

I also am going to do something different with my LA this year, and trying out Mentor Sentences.

I am waiting for our schedule, and I am very interested in knowing how many students I will actually start out with this year.

I have revamped my writing program so I am looking forward to trying that out. I am also adding Mentor Sentences Kahlua...I will check back with you in a few months to see how you like it.

Our contract was stripped 15 years ago and our union went to court to battle the government as it was illegal to strip it and we FINALLY won! So I am also looking forward to our old contract language being followed, in terms of class composition and class sizes.

Although I can not beat 12 students...! How lovely!

That is exciting! It is always a thrill when you find a curriculum that you feel is perfect for your students plus your own style of teaching. I felt that way about Empowering Writers right before I retired. Great program! Good luck and have fun teaching the new program this school year.

Be sure to come back to this board and share what worked with the STEM projects. We are all curious! In fact tell us if anything flops too. We can all learn from mistakes as well. That is part of science, right! I am sure your students will love everything you add. They all love hands on learning.

Mentor sentences sounds like a really good idea. Let us know how it works!

I hope your class has all well behaved students who want to learn this year.

Have a great school year!

12 students! Is that for real? Lucky you and lucky students. I am sure they learn so much more being in such a small class.

That is great news that you won your contract battle! A success story for teachers is rare these days so it is nice hearing a successful one.

Good luck with the changes you are making to writing. It is good to explore and tweak each year as we observe what works with our population of students and what does not.

No, I am sorry. My mistake. That is very loyal of you to stay. I hope it is a good school year for you and your students.

I hope you are able to stretch your last days of summer and enjoy each minute.

I currently have 12 students enrolled in my room too. I had 19 last year, and it was too many. I have no idea how you all do it with 20+. I think around 15 students is a great class size.

15 is a good class size. I have had 16 before but it did not last all year. The biggest I ever had was 22. That is the limit in Texas through fourth grade. In fifth they can have 28 students.

Her's hoping your 2017 - 2018 school year is the best!

Sorry! I was making a joke, referring to Riding4Him's post where she stated she had 12 students. Our new contract language is great, but 24 is the max for grade 3 and I will have 22 as I have three students with Ministry codes.

I prefer 18-20...one year I had a grade one class with 17 kids as a few moved out and no one moved in and that was lovely!

Like a few of the previous posts, I am also excited about implementing mentor sentences into my classroom. I'm sure I will be a little nervous at first until I get the hang of it. I've read many positives about mentor sentences, so I am excited to be teaching grammar in a different way.

I have 2 new teammates (1 I haven't met yet but the other is delightful) and will actually have more girls than boys for a change this year. I'm so excited about that - maybe everything in my class won't get destroyed!
