What are some of the picture books that you use in fifth grade? I use a lot of Eve Bunting and Patricia Polacco. Looking for other ideas Thanks!

Another author I love is Chris Van Allsburg. Jacqueline Woodson and
Byrd Baylor have also written many excellent picture books.

I try to connect Social Studies topics to picture books and using mentor texts for teaching concepts in reading and writing. So the picture book would depend on what you are trying to teach.

Last year's class needed lots of reminding of how to be nice. I used books like: Each Kindness, The Invisible Boy, Rude Cakes, Do Unto Otters, and some others.

Some random picture books I enjoy reading are:
-Fox by Margaret Wild
-Grandpa's Teeth by Rod Clement
-Snow Day by Lester Laminack
-The Book with No Pictures by B. J. Novak

I pretty much read at least one picture book a day!

Last year I discovered a wonderful picture book that I plan to use for many years. I cannot recall the author's name, but the title is, "The Summer My Father Was Ten." It is a great book to read aloud and demonstrate thinking about your thinking (metacognition), and to use for a character analysis lesson. Through the year I also used it for many more concepts.
