Looking for something useful to have students work on for the first part of every class period...

Thanks!

I think a warm-up in a good idea. In language arts, we often do a little entrance ticket or journal entry. I do find that nothing is really five minutes. For that reason, I don't really do one every day.

Sometimes when kids like the writing prompt, they want to keep going and then read theirs aloud. This is great, but can eat up a lot of time we don't exactly have.

When I taught social studies, the students had 4 geography questions each day that they worked together in groups to answer. Lots of map skills.

Language Arts - it varied. I had a resource that reviewed LOTS of English skills. If we were reading a novel, I would give them a couple questions to answer - low and high level thinking. If I had been working on a skill the day or two before, I'd have a couple questions regarding that. We studied Latin/Greek roots, and sometimes I'd have them get out those flashcards and quiz each other.

Whatever I did, I made it routine. They knew to look on the board to see what the bell ringer was for that day.

Pinterest has LOTS of bell ringer options.

Students like the orderly routine of a daily bell ringer. Each day is a different type so that changes things up (Makeover Monday, Tuesday's Terms, Wise Words Wednesday, Thoughtful Thursday, Figurative Language Friday). Students love the journals over the vocabulary work. It usually takes 5-10 min of the class, which works out for our 90 minute block.
