Geography enrichment

I have to hold a rotating 5 week course in Geography for our middle school students. I'm looking for fun activities/ideas to teach them how to read maps, map keys, learn geography terms, etc. This was just asked of me last week...school started today and enrichment starts next Thursday with 6th grade.

Scavenger Hunt

Our 6th graders learn this also. I don't think they really do any fun activities anymore. They used to do a type of scavenger hunt around the school using a map. I think they had compasses and in groups had to locate a certain amount of things. Now, students could probably use the compasses on their cell phones!

Many, many years ago, I think they used to go around our town and do this.

PenpalSchools.com?

Are you familiar with penpalschools.com? Right now, they are offering their "Navigation & Cartography" penpal project for free. (It used to fall under their pay program. The link to the specific project is here.) It is a 3 week project where similarly aged kids from around the world work together online to study related topics and make connections with one another. I haven't used this site yet but I have my eye on a few projects for this coming school year. I love the concept of this service and hope that I can find some projects that would work well for my incoming students. I am not sure if this is something that is possible for you or even of interest but I thought that I would mention it. Best of luck!

Whatever you do, teach these students to use a GPS!! It is such a life skill in the 21st century.

Our local USFS purchased a dozen for one of the general science classes a few years ago. I'll bet you can find an organization willing to fund these.

We had our local Search and Rescue group come into the classroom and teach the kids how to use them. A win-win. The teacher didn't feel proficient and it gave the kids someone else to learn from besides the teachers. Getting the community involve is a great idea.

When teaching geography skills in 6th grade social studies, I used a program called Daily Oral Geography from Great Source. Not even sure they are still in business, but they made wonderful bell ringers, gave the students lots of practice in all geography skills.

Are you familiar with Geo-Caching? It's a Treasure Hunt game/activity using GPS and coded clues. Usually Geo-Caches are set up by people in the community and then clues are offered to find the cache which is sometimes an ammo box or film canister, etc. Once the Cache is found, you sign the log you find inside the container. If it includes a trinket (treasure) then you take one from the cache and leave a different one.

This information is normally found on the Geo-Cache website, but you could unofficially hide caches on campus and make up your own clues.

This is explained better on the Geo-Cache website.

For the wonderful suggestions! I will look into them all and see what works for our 6 week classes.

Happened to see this today. I've not looked at it, but the title caught my eye and remembered your post.

I followed free tech 4 teachers faithfully before I retired. Got lots of great stuff from it.

Hope it has some useful things.

Great Mail Race?

Last year my sixth graders participated in the Great Mail Race. They pulled the name of a state from a hat and had to find three schools to write to. I was amazed at how much they learned about their state without me asking them to. After they investigate, you could ask them to attach the specific terms needed. They loved waiting for letters in return. Good luck!

Kahoot! is wonderful. Our middle school students compete in a geography bee every year, so this should be quite helpful!
