Low Math Class

Clip to ScrapBook #1

We are departmentalized, so I teach 3 classes math. The students are ability grouped by their reading levels (not our choice). My third class is extremely low. Most of them are at least a grade level if not more behind in both reading and math. I am struggling with how to teach this group. My plan is to split the class with the intervention specialist and do small group instruction. The problem with this plan is our intervention specialist disappears from time to time and is hard to track down. I am doing second grade review for daily work, but it is still too difficult for some of them. I know last year, their math teacher focused more on 1st grade standards than 2nd grade. How do I teach them 2nd grade math and 3rd grade math in 90 minutes a day? Has anyone found a great differentiation resource for third grade math. I have never had a whole class so low. Any suggestions? They are all required by the state to take the spring math assessment.

Depending on how many kids you have, I would make tubs for them. I would have some manipulatives to practice counting, add some dice games, and some things for any other skill they need. It sounds like you can't teach 3rd grade yet until they have acquired some number sense. I am reviewing right now and my low group are having to practice clocks, number lines, basic counting and skip counting. Once they are comfortable with those skills you can move forward. I have seen kids look a light bulb literally went off when they start making connections. They will get there, it will just be slow. I think I'm giving myself a pep talk here! Lol! Best of luck!

Thanks for the response. I have never had a group so low. I will try the tubs.
