Students are let in at 8:35 but the bell doesn't actually ring until 8:50. We go to specials right away at 9.

I am looking for ideas for what to have my students do during that time. Currently, they write to different prompts but it doesn't seem to be holding their attention.

Every year that I taught, be it any grade from first through fifth, the students began their morning with Morning Work. There were two review math problems and a sentence which they had to write correctly. An example for beginning of the year fourth grade may be:

563 - 79 = 678 + 895 =

me and sally is going too taco bell on saturday

I would write the math problems vertically but I couldn't seem to get it done on the computer.

I've tried a variety through the years. But the most effective with no prep and grading involved or taking time to go over, is independent reading. Our students stagger in, some bring breakfast, so reading is perfect!

Those first 15 minutes are a good time to make their lunch selections, Daily- 5 choices, turn-in folder work/papers from home and get 3 sharp pencils... besides unpacking and putting stuff away. A single page handout of pertinent Math or Language Arts or Writing is also a good starter for the day and use of that time.

Soft Start

We're starting our day with a "soft start". Students can choose an activity - legos, drawing, reading, puzzles, etc. - to take back to their desks to work on quietly while I play music for them. It's a nice way to ease into the day for all of us.

I use Calendar math for my 4th graders from Teaching in Room 6. I also use Time for kids or Story works.

I have used Daily Math and Daily Language from Evan Moore before. It is a good quick review that kids can work on independently. This year I am using a morning work from teacher pay teacher's author Kristin Nannini. It is very good and correlated to common core. I made it into a comb-bound booklet in half year sections.

With our schedule, we haven't done "morning work" in several years. However, what I did use when we had MW was Daily Lang. Review. or a writing prompt with illustrating.
