How can you help a child with hand determination?

Hello everyone,

I have been doing preschool for about 4 years now. I love it. I am currently experiencing where I have a child that can not make up his mind which hand he prefers to write, or throw with. I am not one to force using one hand more than the other. I just need some ideas on how I can help him to determine which is better for him to use. Thanks for all the advise

He may never actually decide. My brother is ambidextrous, and it has worked out fine for him.

Some don't choose

until they are older like 7 or 8. I would not force anyone to choose nor would I "try to help them determine" at this point.

If anything, you might make tally marks or some other informal data gathering about which hand you can see if there is a prevalence already.

Like a PP said, it may be that he never chooses.

Thank you for the advise.

I just never seen someone not choose a hand before. I have had him write his name with both hands and they are about equally the same.

Thanks again

My son was ambidextrous until about first grade. He writes with his left hand, bats right handed and shoots a basketball left handed.

I agree with others who say just let him be and he will figure it out eventually. Or he'll be ambidextrous.
