Question about spelling tests. Do you add sentences to your spelling tests? How do you come up with the sentences and how do you grade them?

We have a spelling sentence with our test each week. I came up with the sentences myself, based on the week's list and high frequency words. The rest of my team approved them. Each word is counted as a point, one point for capital at the beginning, one point for punctuation at the end. The following sentence would be worth 10 points.

The boy likes to play with his dog.

Our spelling program adds 2 sentences to their lists partway through the year.

We grade them just as dawnmei posted.

In my previous school all spelling was assessed through sentence dictation. However Abeka asks them to write a sentence using a vocabulary word starting about January. I have chosen a middle ground with two dictation sentences that include several of the spelling words. I begin in December for practice and start grading in January. I grade each word, capital and punctuation as five points each and give two spelling test grade each week. After looking at this post I think I prefer the 10 point system included in the same test grade that they are describing better. I do like that words must be spelled correctly in a sentence since that is the purpose of spelling and appears to be a harder skill for most second graders.

Front page is simple dictation of 10 spelling words. Back page is dictation of 3 sentences I have made up with spelling words imbedded. I grade the back with 15 points, knocking off a point for each misspelling or lack of capital/period, etc. Then I add both sides to get a score out of 25 which is converted to a percentage. This percentage makes it easy to average out to convert to a spelling grade for report cards. Hope this helps.
