Hi All -

I am looking for new suggestions for those advanced students who are finished way before the others. Welcoming any and all ideas to add to my third grade classroom this year.

Thanks in advance!

I think it's great to give these kids a bit of a choice. I always allow reading, and I like to have some sort of math or logic puzzle posted for anyone interested as well. Some other ideas:

Writing word problems for the math skill you are practicing

How many words can you make from the letters in ________?

Memorizing (a poem, so many digits of Pi, etc.)

Extension of science or history lessons - articles in a little higher reading level that you print from the web or something

Allow them some geography games, memorization, research for those who like social studies. Since we no longer memorize states, continents, countries, rivers and mountains many people are very ignorant of the geography of our world. Also the study of cultures can bring an awareness of how people around the world are similar and different from us. They could study hats from around the world. Or clothing in general. Or what about homes, schools, restaurants, food.....

I am trying a STEM challenge of the week. If they are finished early they work on the STEM challenge. They have to make their plan, design, carry out their plan, and then critique their plan.

My early finishers love it, and they don't feel like I am giving them busy work!

This week they will have to build the tallest tower they can with 25 straws and 1ft of making tape.

KenKen puzzles are a great math challenge, and they come in a variety of difficulty levels.
