Update on cruise in the South Pacific

Hello all,

This is connieg. I forgot my password, so am entered as a guest.

The 22 day cruise is coming to an end this Sunday. We have danced, lovely people, attended lectures, dance lessons, etc. and met lovely people. I'll write all about it when I return in Nov.

Our highlight has been two days in Fiji. On the first, we just hired a taxi driver to take us to the Garden of the Sleeping Giant and then he took us to his local market, shopping in town, some side trips and then took us to his home for tea and dessert. That was so cool!
We felt very honored and special! Then, we went to the museum where the Miss Fiji contest was being held. It is a very Christian country and very conservative.

The downside is that the majority of passengers seem to have a cough. I'm on the mend but my husband is in the thick of it. No matter how hard one tries, it can happen. Fortunately, my md gives us antibiotics to take on the cruise.

We passed the equator and the International Date line where we lose a whole day. The weather is lovely and warm but not even hot at the equator.

Six days until Sydney!

So glad you are enjoying your trip. Figi is so far my favorite place I've been. DH didn't go with me so would love to take him some day.

I hope your husband will get over his cough soon.
I love Fiji. I was there for two weeks a decade ago, traveling to the different islands and doing a lot of diving. I had a similar experience with a taxi driver in Nadi who took me home to his family for dinner. It was lovely. He was of Indian descent, and his wife cooked the most delicious Indian meal.
Enjoy the rest of your cruise!

Wow! Fiji - dream come true! When you passed the International Date Line was there some kind of special celebration? Seems to me I've heard that that is made into a very big deal!

date line

Sorry for hijacking your post, but I wanted to share my Date Line experience in Fiji. When I was on Taveuni Island ("garden island"), I found out that the international date line ran right through it (180º meridian) and was near the small hotel where I stayed. I felt like Doctor Who as I was able to jump from today to tomorrow and back, and also straddle the date line so I had one leg in each time zone.
