We are beginning Genius Hour with our first graders and Id love some suggestions on how people kicked that off with their kids. How did you even explain it to them?

I did it with primary last year.

We began with some creativity activities (It's Not a Box plus some others), read alouds (What Do You Do With a Problem? plus more), and videos (Cane's Arcade plus some others).

If you google Genius Hour, you will find many ideas for how to get started.

We talked about finding our "passions". What do we really want to learn more about? From there, they each chose something and off we went.

For various reasons, I'm not doing it again this year. However, my kids are all doing independent research projects during Daily 5 because that is something they chose to do. I'm just not calling it Genius Hour or focusing too much on it.

I'm going to begin Wonder Wall

with my first graders in January. Our schedule only permits one day in a 6 day block to work on it. I am not going Genius Hour full force because I think it's too much for this age group. I'm going to have them add sticky notes to their part of the wall (maybe a photo of them) noting the things they want to learn about. Then they will each select one of their "wonders" to research. I hope I can get a couple parents in to help. I don't want it too complicated!
