fundations g

Clip to ScrapBook #1

This is my first year teaching kindergarten. I am doing "fundations" and loving watching them learn to write.

We are doing "g" this week. I noticed the g in fundations is the double looped lower case version. Why? and how do I explain this to the kids?

It's not the Old English G in the handwriting program or the large sound cards, but it is on the small sound cards and letter tiles. They introduced it because it is a letter they will encounter in texts, especially older texts. You explain it that way. "Sometimes a g is typed like this. When we write it, we write it like this. They both mean the same thing and serve the same purpose." Make sure you have a model of the handwriting G (like the large sound cards) to compare and contrast. It's the same case with the Old English a and the handwriting a.

Ohhh...I call the a and g "funky fonts." I tell the kids they need to know it because sometimes the letters look like that in books. My kids think funky fonts are funny.
