Students missing tests.

I have always given spelling tests on Fridays. It's a routine we have - pre-test on Monday, test on Friday. This has worked fine in past years, and worked well 1st quarter.
I posted about our short weeks in the other forum. Basically, we only have 3 Fridays this quarter. Which would normally mean I give the spelling test on Thursday. Unfortuanately, literally half of my class misses Language Arts on Thursday due to gifted classes.
So I'm torn on what to do. Either excuse all of those students from spelling tests, move the spelling test to Wednesdays, or have those students make up the test - which would have to be on the following Monday.
It wouldn't be an issue, but I have to give 2 spelling grades every week.

This year I moved my spelling week to run from Thursday to Wednesday. I pretest and give words on Thursday and test the following Wednesday. It works so much better for me! My school has a higher absentee rate on Mondays and Fridays. Plus, I get the test graded before the weekend.

It took some getting used to for parents. I tell them that having a lot of tests on Friday makes for a long day.

If you are in a groove with your Fridays, then I would recommend telling your students that Friday's test is bumped to Monday if there is no school on a Friday. You can quick give the Friday test and then move right in to your Monday pre-test.

Not a fan of traditional spelling tests, but MrsCroak did have a good solution. Do these gifted kids ace the pretest? If so, there is no reason to test them. They have already demonstrated they can spell the words.
